Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome.

Set the fabulously camp and some what seeded apparel of the Kit Kat Klub aside and you will find a musical that exceeds the stereotypical misconception associated with dinner theatre; a nightly excuse for lashings of glitter and jazz-hands. Cabaret provides a sincere and moving commentary on life under the increasing fear of fascism as well as a night of decadent entertainment in an unrivaled setting.

The story follows the disastrous life of Sally Bowles (Sophie Berner), an aspiring singer and actress, and her friends and acquaintances in early ‘30s Berlin, including the American writer Clifford Bradshaw (Jens Schnarre/Guido Kleineidam), their reserved land lady Fräulein Schneider (Maren Kroymann) and the ecentric ring leader of the cabaret (Michael Kargus/Eric Rentmeister). As the story progresses, hope for any of the characters well being decreases and the only happiness to be found is that which is unwholesomely played out at the sinister Kit Kat Klub.

Every last authenticating detail was taken care of at the Tipi theatre, from the usher and usherettes each fully kitted out in tasseled flapper dresses or classic tuxedos, to the individual candle lit tables and finally the wonderful cross-dressing bar maid, ensuring that once seated, life truly became a cabaret.

The performers were cast brilliantly and executed the sentiment behind the story as if it was second nature, proving that those who have forsaken musical theatre as sub par to the real stage experience, should think again. Particular mention must be given to the heart-wrenching, sensitively acted relationship between Fräulein Schneider and Jewish shop owner, Herr Schultz (Peter Kock). Although the musical has foreboding overtones, with the band raucously playing and enough dirty jokes even for one of Fräulein Kost’s sailors, it is almost impossible not to have a fantastic evening.

Cabaret runs at the Tipi until the 29th of August.
